Background reading
If you feel you need to refresh some of the topics which are usually covered on initial ELT training courses, here is a useful site which has self-study worksheets on a number of key areas. Choose a title that appeals to you and see how you get on.
Here is a great site with a lot of games to help you learn / revise the vowel phonemes. There's never been a better time to learn those symbols!
When you are accepted onto our Delta course, there will be a pre-course task to help you prepare for the course. It is a self-study pack of activities and includes suggestions of books to read. For the moment, here are a couple of key texts:
The Language Instinct Pinker, S (1995) Penguin
A very readable, fascinating account of language. Not written for ELT but surprisingly relevant to the Delta course.
How Languages Are Learned Lightbown P & Spada N (2013) OUP
An accessible overview of first and second language acquisition and the bearing that research findings in these areas have on classroom practice. Very readable.
Roger, the main Verona Delta course tutor has recently started a blog sponsored by Cambridge English Italy. It contains some advice and classroom ideas for teachers who are preparing students for the Cambridge exams - although many of the ideas are applicable to non-exam classes too. Please take a look here.
